MARIANAS CHAPTER - 12/11/2013
Col. Mike Warlick, USMC (Ret.), vice president for regional and chapter outreach/deputy for defense, AFCEA International, visits with the chapter's officers in December. The chapter welcomed AFCEA International's Col. Mike Warlick, USMC (Ret.), vice president for regional and chapter outreach/deputy for defense, in December. Warlick visited Guam and met and briefed various military, government and private sector leadership. He was instrumental in helping build more and better relations throughout the Guam community.

MARIANAS CHAPTER - 09/18/2013
Cmdr. Martin Sabel, USN (r), chapter president, presents Rick Markle, chapter treasurer, and his wife Sadako with a farewell certificate and traditional Latte Stone replica in September. In September, the chapter and many of the island communication leaders bid a fond farewell to Rick Markle, chapter treasurer and Joint Region Marianas chief information officer. Markle was instrumental in restarting the chapter and organizing three very successful TechNet events. Markle and his wife Sadako were presented with a letter of appreciation and a traditional Latte Stone replica.

Robert Haulbrook, president and chief executive officer of GTA TeleGuam, accepts a corporate membership plaque from Matt Hempel, chapter vice president for programs. At the May general membership luncheon meeting, the chapter presented a corporate membership plaque to Robert Haulbrook, president and chief executive officer of GTA TeleGuam. The chapter has many active GTA members, and they volunteer their time and contribute generously to chapter events.

Lt. Gen. John A. Dubia, USA (Ret.), executive vice president of AFCEA International, addresses the chapter at a reception held in his honor in July. In July, the chapter held a reception for Lt. Gen. John A. Dubia, USA (Ret.), executive vice president of AFCEA International, at the Sheraton Laguna Guam Resort. More than 50 members and guests attended this unique event, and the chapter had two corporate sponsors: Bank of Guam and Panduit. Gen. Dubia spoke about the evolving role of AFCEA International, and he described his recent experience visiting Korea, Japan and Singapore.

Rear Adm. Peter A. Gumataotao, USN, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea, speaks to more than 110 members and guests at the chapter's July luncheon. The chapter selected Rear Adm. Pete A. Gumataotao, USN, commander, U.S. Naval Forces Korea, as the special guest speaker for the July luncheon. More than 110 members and guests attended to hear from the first Chamorro Navy flag officer. The luncheon coincided with the July independence and liberation festivities. After an introduction by Lt. Gen. John A. Dubia, USA (Ret.), executive vice president of AFCEA International, Adm. Gumataotao shared his views on how C4I enhances the capability of the warfighter and the success of missions. He also discussed how education helped him with his career and life objectives and provided guidance on effective leadership during his 45-minute speech.

Newly elected officers are sworn in during the January ceremony marking the chapter's return to active status. In January newly elected officers were installed during a ceremony featuring Rear Adm. Bill French, USN, commander of U.S. Naval Forces Marianas, as the keynote speaker. Dr. Claudette Millsap, president-elect, who is chief information officer for the Commander Naval Forces Marianas, said the local chapter was formed in the 1960s but later "fizzled out." In November 2007 she and several of her peers got together to revitalize the then-defunct chapter. After dozens of phone calls encouraging fellow communications and technology professionals, the small group grew its membership to about 50 people. "What we try to do is promote the technical education of the folks on Guam (through) scholarships for sailors and internships, grants and other programs," Millsap said. She said competitive grants will be available to local public high school science teachers to help them expand their curriculum.
